People, Programs & Publications for Law-Related Education
Since its inception in 1998, the Law-Related Education Advisory (LREA) Committee of the North Carolina Bar Association's Foundation has been committed to providing North Carolina’s teachers access to the PEOPLE, PROGRAMS and PUBLICATIONS they need to make law-related education interesting, meaningful and fun for their students. The following are examples of how LRE “People, Programs and Publications” help educate students about the legal system and the legal profession.
PEOPLE:
LRE puts teachers in touch with lawyers and other legal professionals who can bring law-related topics to life in the classroom.
PROGRAMS:
PROGRAMS FOR EDUCATORS:
- Attorneys for Partnering for Progress in Legal Education (A.P.P.L.E) Conference - A one-day program of law-related and civic education projects and presentations for educators and legal professionals.
- Justice Teaching Institute (JTI) - A program designed to increase teachers’ understanding of the court system and judicial process and to give them the tools they need to pass that knowledge on to their students.
Law-Related Education of the North Carolina Bar Association Foundation
Law-Related Education (LRE) encompasses the educational outreach efforts of the North Carolina Bar Association. Conducted through the LRE Department under the direction of Diane Wright and the LRE Advisory Committee of the NCBA Foundation, the widely acclaimed public service initiative was launched by the NCBA in 1998 under the heading of Lawyers in the Schools. LRE also maintains partnership status with We The People, administered nationally by the Center for Civic Education.
LRE depends on volunteer lawyers to bring its PEOPLE, PROGRAMS and RESOURCES to educators and the community across North Carolina.

PEOPLE: connecting legal volunteers who provide civic and legal education in schools, at community forums, and other organizational seminars.
PROGRAMS: Under the guidance of the LRE Advisory Committee, the Law-Related Education Department offers programs for students, teachers and the community as a whole.
For Teachers: Justice Teaching Institute, a 2.5-day institute; Mock Trial Training; and professional development for We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution, Project Citizen and Representative Democracy in America. LRE also provides legal professionals, upon request, who will visit classrooms and talk to students. Also, provide volunteers to coach Mock Trial, We the People and Project Citizen Teams.
For Students: 8th Grade & High School Diversity in the Profession; Justice James Iredell Middle School Mock Trial Tournament; Teens and Attorneys Partners in Success (TAPS); special initiatives; YouTube and Essay Contests; We the People Simulated Congressional Hearings; Project Citizen Public hearing showcasing; opportunities to discuss the a career in law with legal professionals on career days; and opportunities for students to job shadow legal professionals.
