We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution

The We the People Subcommittee is Chaired by Rufus Allen and Diane Savage. The primary goal of this instructional program is to promote civic competence and responsibility in elementary, middle and high school students. Students study materials relating to the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the principles and development of constitutional democracy in the United States. High school classes may choose to culminate their study through participation in competitions styled as simulated congressional hearings. Regional winners compete for the state title in Raleigh, and the state champions compete in Washington, DC, in the halls of Congress, for the national title alongside teams from every state in the nation. Begun in 1987 and funded by the U.S. Department of Education and administered nationally by the Center for Civic Education, this is the first exciting year of the We the People/LRE partnership.
